About us About us

I love giving something back to the local community, especially the youngsters that live around here

Mrs Spillings is by far Arches’ longest serving resident, having moved into Arches first property at 50 Wincobank Lane way back in 1975. Mrs Spillings, Rita to her friends, has been married to Tony for the past 45 years and now lives in a beautifully decorated bungalow in Sheffield.

Her three grown up children don’t live too far away from her, all residing within a five mile radius. Rita and Tony are grandparents to seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren, although you could be confused for thinking the pair have many more great grandchildren as they are affectionately known as ‘surrogate grandparents’ for many of the local children living down their street.

Every Easter and Christmas, Rita prepares small little lucky treat bags for the local children – it’s become quite a tradition amongst the local children. It’s clear to see that both Rita and Tony relish the company of the younger generation as both of them pride themselves on helping others.

Rita comments: “I love giving something back to the local community, especially the youngsters that live around here – they are such nice children, and their families are lovely too. Many of them have had to face tough times in recent years and our little treat bags are a small token on the grand scheme of things.”

Mr and Mrs Spillings are at the centre of a lovely community, and they take great pride in their house and its wonderful gardens. Tony is busily getting his vegetables ready in the greenhouse, whilst Rita has a fantastic eye for design and colour – which is evident from the decor of her home – something she designed herself.

Rita continues: “I designed every room in the house, I come up with the ideas and Tony has to execute them – he’s not bad with a paintbrush. I just love pretty things and interior design. I’ve had to slow down a little bit now (much to Tony’s relief) but I still have so many ideas I’d love to do.”

When asked about her 50 years as an Arches resident, Rita is very complimentary of the staff at Arches, and she prides herself on knowing lots of them over the past 50 years.

She comments: “I’ve known so many of the Arches staff over the years, they’ve always been so friendly, and I know whatever issue I have, I can pick up the phone and speak to someone without having to go through to a call centre – it’s really reassuring I’m speaking to someone who can help”.
