“I was drawn into the housing sector because of my own personal experiences of being homeless at a young age”
Andrew has worked in housing for over 35 years, in a multitude of different roles. He has by his standards only been with Arches for the past 17 months, but what a 17 months it’s been. His current role as a Housing Officer is, as you can imagine, a varied one. On any given day Andrew, or Andy to his friends, is responsible for many things from managing and maintaining Arches’ properties through to working closely with the tenants themselves, supporting their many needs – no two days are the same!
It's team work though that Andy praises and Arches’ approach to bringing everyone together, so they all sing from the same hymn sheet ensuring the tenants are the ones who benefit from all the hard work done on the ground. Andrew adds:
“What keeps me motivated is having a supportive housing team around me and seeing the positive impact we can have on our tenants' lives. Knowing that our work helps families find stability and security is incredibly rewarding. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities to learn and grow. The sense of community at Arches is truly inspiring.”
When Andrew was asked ‘what attracted him to working in the housing sector’, his answer
gives you an insight into why he’s been working in the sector for the last 35-40 years and why it’s so important to him - personally. He comments:
“I was drawn into the housing sector because of my own personal experiences of being homeless at a young age and my passion for community cohesion and social justice. I wanted to make a tangible difference in people's lives and help them secure safe and affordable housing, just as I was helped all those years ago.”
He goes on to add:
“Arches is a dedicated and compassionate housing association that has been serving the community for half a century. We focus on providing quality housing and support services to BME communities, ensuring that everyone has access to safe and affordable homes. I’m proud of our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social justice – this sets us apart from the rest in my eyes and ensures we’re really helping our communities to grow and thrive.”
