Right to Buy and Right to Acquire

Right to Buy

Most housing association tenants do not have the Right to Buy. But if you were a secure council tenant and were living in your home when it was transferred from your council to a housing association, then you may have a ‘Preserved’ Right to Buy. We will be able to tell you if you have this ‘right’. 

There are also a small number of other secure tenants the may have the right to buy. 

If you have the Right to Buy, you can buy your home in the same way as if you were still a council tenant.

Right to Acquire

Right to Acquire (RTA) is the discounted home purchase scheme for assured housing association tenants. As an Arches Housing tenant you may be eligible for this scheme once you have held a social housing tenancy for 3 years. Your home must also meet certain criteria:

Your home must either have been:

• built or bought by a housing association after 31 March 1997 (and funded through a social housing grant provided by the Housing Corporation or local council)
• transferred from a local council to a housing association after 31 March 1997

Some of our properties are not eligible because of their age, that they are adapted for older or disabled people or how they were funded originally.

Discount

The discount is fixed by the government and is currently £10000 in Sheffield and £9000 in Rotherham and Chesterfield.
