What is domestic abuse?

Domestic abuse includes any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive,
threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or
have been, partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality.

Domestic abuse doesn't just refer to physical violence but can encompass many forms of abuse:

  • Emotional abuse
  • Threats and intimidation
  • Physical abuse
  • Sexual abuse
  • Financial control
  • Honour-based violence

Remember:

  • You are not alone.
  • Absolutely anyone can be the victim of abuse.
  • The abuse is not your fault - only the abuser is at fault for abuse.
  • Assault is a criminal offence and is never excusable.
  • Violence is never the way to solve conflict in the home.
  • You can survive and move on from an abusive relationship.
  • Even if someone has behaved appallingly, there is no excuse to abuse someone.
  • You shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help. There are many organisations out there that will help and support you.
  • We are here to help and support you.
